The Great Hihi Sperm Race is run by the Hihi Society – all proceeds will go directly to hihi conservation, to be administered by the Hihi Recovery Group. The race is open to anyone over the age of 18.
Players can choose to back any of the 128 male hihi for which Dr Helen Taylor collected sperm swimming speed data for in October/November 2018. The minimum bid per bird is $10.
Players may bid on as many birds as they want to, and may place multiple bids on the same bird. Multiple players may place bids on the same bird. The winning bird will be the male that is found to have the fastest swimming sperm according to Dr Taylor’s analyses.
Fastest swimming means the fastest mean (average) swimming speed in um/second across all sperm measured for that male. The identity of this bird is not known at the time of opening the competition as Dr Taylor will be conducting her analyses while the competition is running.
When the winning bird is established, all players who have backed that bird will go into a random draw for hihi prize packs (to be determined from a combination of the prizes listed on this website).
Any player who has backed the winning bird multiple times will receive a corresponding number of entries into the prize draw and will be eligible to win more than one prize. In the event that the winning bird does not have enough backers to allocate all prize packs, a prize draw will be conducted for the bird with the second fastest sperm and so on until all prize packs are allocated. Please note: The Hihi Society is charged 2.9% plus $0.30NZD per transaction. Thus, if your donation is for $10, the Hihi Society will receive $9.41, with $0.59NZD being paid in credit card fees.
